Ready to Host Your Garage Sale?

Here Are Some Garage Sale Tips!

Plan Ahead

• Schedule your garage sale date (2-3 weeks before the sale).
• Weekends are best for the most traffic.
• Set the time for your sale – expect earlybirds.
• Multi-family sales are popular – ask your family and friends to join you.

Gather your sale items

• Do some spring cleaning! Check the attic, garage, closets and other storage areas.
• Ask your friends and neighbors for things they no longer need.
• Children’s toys, books, antiques, appliances, clothes and furniture usually sell the best.
• Remember – one person’s trash is another’s treasure! You will be amazed at what people will buy – don’t throw anything away!.

Advertise Your Sale

• Place a classified ad in the Yuma Sun Classifieds. Place your ad by Wednesday and your ad will appear in the Yuma Sun for up to three daysand on yumasun.com. Place ad by Tuesday and your ad will also appear in Bajo El Sol.

• Be specific about the terms of the sale, specify sizes on clothes.

• Get your posters ready to direct buyers to your sale. Keep them simple – they have to be able to read from a car driving by!

• Follow Local Sign Ordinances For Posting Garage Sale Signs.

Price Your Items

• Be realistic! Price your items at about 25-30% of retail. Be ready to discount them if you really want to get rid of them!

• Label all items with your price tags. If more than one family is involved in your sale you may want to distinguish between the items. Use a highlighter to color the label or code the label with a letter initial.

• Pricing your items will save you a lot of time answering questions.

Have A Successful Sale!

Have plenty of change ready. Most people come with $5, $10 or $20 bills.

• Have someone help you out – family or friends are good choices.

• Have a calculator ready to total up items.

• Have grocery bags and newspapers on hand to wrap purchases.

• Smile and greet your visitors. Engage them in conversation. You will
meet a lot of nice people!

• Be helpful but allow your buyers to browse.

• Be ready to enter into friendly negotiations

 Garage Sale Sign Guidelines

• Temporary signs should be placed only on the personal property of the person posting them, or have the permission of the owner if the signs go on someone else’s property.

• Don’t post signs on public right-of-way. If you’re unsure what is considered public right of way, call the city for assistance.

• Garage/yard sale signs or other such temporary displays cannot be attached to utility poles or street signs, as these illegally posted signs pose a public safety risk by obscuring signs or causing a distraction for drivers.

• Put up your signs the morning of the sale and take them down when you’re finished.
